Penrose Light Railway

The Penrose Light Railway is a short 10¼" gauge railway laid on our private site in Cornwall.

The railway was originally laid at the Woolverton House Hotel near Bath, and owned by Noel Terry. The railway was around ¼ mile in length, and ran with (we believe) two locomotives; a 2-4-2 petrol locomotive and a Bassett Lowke Royal Scot completed by Noel Terry. The railway was sold (except the Royal Scot) to Roy Harvey in 2003 and moved to his site near Bristol. After two years his plans to lay the railway had not come to fruition, and he advertised the railway for sale. We purchased the complete railway in July 2005.

An initial length of around 100yds was laid permanently from 2006 onwards. This runs from a station at 'Penrose Halt', through a cutting along one edge of the field, up to a 'tunnel' at the top of the field also provides covered accomodation for the locomotives and rolling stock. It is planned to extend the railway further in the fullness of time.

Trackwork is aluminium rail, screwed to 4" x 2" x 24" wooden sleepers. There are four points on the railway, with one further point awaiting laying on the extension.

As the site is unsuitable for access by the general public, it is hoped that we can open a second railway locally which would open regularly to the public.
